As mentioned you need a either Flash or in some rare cases Silverlight installed, anything else I wouldn't install.

Streaming video is problematic for few reasons. Firstly you have the codec issue which can be problematic even with one OS let alone cross platform. There is no universal codec other mayby MPEG1 which is really not suitable because it uses so much bandwidth compared to modern codec.

Secondly there is no way to reliably embed video into a HTML document that is cross browser friendly using HTML4 alone, there is just no specs for it and every browser has their own little thing they do.

By using a plugin like Flash or Silverlight you can eliminate all these issues and reliably deliver video/audio content to nearly anyone as long as they have the plugin installed.

This issue will become moot in the future as websites transition to HTML5 which has native support for audio and video. It will be standardized.

I watch streams of NHL games from time to time. Some streams do not work with a Mac. I've always been able to find one that does work though.
