Think the only hardware configuration ever did was slapping in a new memory chip. Checked to make sure the new memory chip was compatible and the laptop supported it. Even did not exceed size restrictions.

I am a firm believer of Detective Columbo's crime scene logic for finding the culprit:
- What is there that was not there before? (what hardware/software was added right before the issue surfaced?)
- What isn't there that was there before? (what hardware/software was taken out or uninstalled?)
- What is different/changed? (modifications made in the case or on the system?)
At this point, take out that last memory added and see how it behaves.
Simple and cheap troubleshooting.
If it's the popular global system, ditch it and go for the competitors system, may be more expensive, but damn well worth it. I am well over that system. Had to restore using the restore disks and after finishing I had an error message - from the restore disks...??? That's when I decided to make a frizzby out of my laptop and go competitor brand, best thing I ever did computer wise. I would have bought a proper anti-virus program as well, but then as with everything else with that popular system my hand would be forever in my pockets handing out money for one thing or another, on top of almost daily upgrades, updates and eventual system failures blah blah. I'm finally a happy man now I'm shot of that system, and all the IT leeches that it supports.
I went to Device Manager and other places to check, and it's "Working Properly". It took me a long time to find some anti malware software because I thought I had those on my laptop.
Device Mangler, errr Manager, is not a hardware diagnostic tool, all it will tell you is if a driver for a device is installed and working properly, it cannot tell you if a piece of hardware, such as a hard drive, is good or bad. Your hard drive was bad, the driver was fine, you destroyed your laptop due to a lack of understanding.
