I pay my bills and check my balance. The news is always old. The weather inaccurate. I cancelled Facebook because it was just people trying to sell me stuff. I still use AMAZON ..
If the news always seems old why not go to different news sources?
The weather inaccurate? and that is a problem with the Internet, how? Are you disgusted with your TV too? They broadcast the same weather reports one see's on the Internet. I still do the old fashioned thing and stare up at the sky a few times a day.
I've never had anyone try to sell me something on FB, maybe I'm using a different one than you use?
Obviously your requirements are quite limited concerning your use of a computer so for you it makes sense that for you it's a waste of time and money.

Yes they are, I suggest you throw yours away and never touch one again!
I DO NOT want to go back to having to do all my research using books and journals at the library - no way would I be able to work full time and be in a PhD program full time.
I DO NOT want to have to go back to typing all my papers on a typewriter (see above).
I DO NOT want to have to go back to using snail mail to get documents back and forth (see above; see work).
My list of why my computer isn't a waste of time could go on and on and on. Throw yours away; leave mine alone!

and with continued budget cuts to schools and such, good luck getting new editions of any relevant books and journals in the library
anyway, it sounds to me that OP is fed up with the Internet, not computers. turn it off once in a while!
As I sit here on my computer, yes, it is a waste of time lol. I like that I can pay bills, and every once in a while it's useful and entertaining. But, for the most part the computer is too easy to preoccupy your mind and definitely takes away from more constructive (yet harder) tasks.
Sometimes I wonder how much money I would have saved over the years if I wouldn't have researched and looked at things online that I would have never otherwise got into.
I wonder how many things I would still be ignorant on if I had to depend on going to the local library to research a topic I was interested in vs being able to look up the facts instantaneously.
I wonder how many things would not be communicated back and forth between my family members and friends if it weren't for computers... Not to mention the video chats... Seeing my new grand-daughter in my son's arms live from 1,500 miles away is worth every penny I spent on my computer system.
Having a computer means I have one place to store all the families videos and be able to shoot copies to whomever in the family wants one...
Has my computer stopped me from any of my other interests? not in the least. Another benefit? I can write and publish my son's soccer newsletter here in the house... I need a recipe? ~~ Google search....
The kids still have their library cards and know how to use them, no-one in my household is addicted to the computer, it's just another tool.
I am addicted to my computer, but not for the usual "social networking" reasons. I mean I have my Facebook page but I might look at it once or twice per day, if even that.
I am very inquisitive. Many times I think "I wonder if/what/etc......". With my PC I always have the answer at my fingertips. I am a videophile. I love to create and edit video, plus everything I record to the DVR I can offload to a PC for archiving. I also have approximately 20,000 songs stored and everything in the house streams from this PC so that virtually every room has access to the same music/video library.
Of course there is also the bill paying and online shopping.
They are only a waste of time depending on how you use them. If all you do is facebook and email, heck you can do that from most cell phones these days. Even then, "waste of time" is a relative statement.
