I've been wondering whether its best to leave the modem on when the computer is shut down. Or should the modem be turned off. My practice has been to turn off the modem when I shut down the computer. I've been through 3 modems over the last 5 years. Will leaving it on prolong the life of the modem?

I leave my modem on 24/7. I've never had them break. However, I don't see how turning it on and off can contribute to it breaking. Three in 5 years is pretty bad.

You either had really lousy quality modems, or you are turning the modems on and off too frequently.

With the modern build structure of modems today, the frequent turning on and off, may be the culprit that is ruining your modems.
Each time you turn it on, the parts heat up, not much but they do heat up, and thus everything expands, then when you turn it off, everything cools down again and it all contracts. Too much of this, gong on will brake connections in the circuitry in many cases.

The power the modems consume, is very little compared to the cost of the modems you will be spending, if you continue to do this turning on and off a lot.

Once a day turning on or off should not be detrimental.

Same is valid for your computer.
Set it up to *go to sleep* when you do not use it for a couple of hours.

I am actually surprised that you have not been getting computer failures yet ...

I leave all my networking equipment on all the time. I'd hate to have to spend the time every morning to boot up the modem, get sync, then boot up the router.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. The modem that I've been using is a motorola. At 75 bucks, I'm thinking at looking at some other brands. Any suggestions are welcome. I will be leaving the modem on from now on and see how that works out.

The other night I must of spent 2 hours for it to work. Finally I decided to go ahead a buy another one. Frustrating.

Never turn off my computers, router or modem.

Perhaps the OP needs to invest in a good UPS that does power conditioning...

All my is connected to a surge protector and I turn that off which turns all the devices. Leaving the surge protector on even after powering each device, still draws quite a bit of juice which adds up.
I don't turn everything off completely if I am only going to be gone for 15-20 minutes but if it us an hour or more, I will. Never had any issues.
Do you use a surge protector? Not a cheap $10 one but a nice one with a high joule rating.
