Anyone use Comodo Internet Security suite? Did you find it effective?

I was thinking about trying it out. I've used their firewall before and it seemed to work pretty good, but I have no idea about their anti-virus.

Specifically, I was wondering how the AV compared to other free AV's out there (AVG, Avast, Avira)

Every few years there is a shift to what the new "hip and cool" FREE AV suite is. Comodo is the new darling, displacing AVG.
I would recommend it.
Although, in an odd shift, behemoth Microsoft got into the game with their own free suite - Microsoft Security Essentials. It makes sense for them to do it. Who can better protect Windows than Microsoft? So, MS actually has a good free "hip" product out there now.

I haven't had a need for a third party firewall or antivirus product in many years. I use Microsoft's own firewall (included with the OS) and Microsoft Security Essentials. I do use Spybot and Malwarebytes because they are useful for non-virus malware.

I run behind a router (which has its own firewall). So I see no value in another security product, free or priced.

Bingo! MSE updates with Windows, making it effortless to use. I too see no value is using another product.
