OK, so I have 2 laptops that are old and useless.

I tried getting the hard drive out and cannot. Used a screwdriver, bad language, etc. and now I want to know if I can somehow destroy it while still in the computer? Someone said to drill holes in it. Well, I don't even know exactly where it is so that would be a lotta holes. Can I just throw the whole thing in the trash, or is that illegal????

Thanks for your help ahead of time.

I suspect that if you place it on your driveway and run over it a few times, most people won't bother trying to retrieve info off the hard drive (pun intended). Is it illegal to throw it away? Hon, EVERYTHING is illegal in the states. You might have to spend a few minutes finding the law that covers it, but that is the way it is.

First, boot a live linux distro and in terminal run "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1M".

Then buy a neodymium magnet and run it across the exposed hard drive platters for 30 minutes.

Then microwave the platters.

Then run them over with your car.

Then burn them in your fireplace.

Then sacrifice a small woodland animal to the Tiamat, the babylonian god of chaos, and mix the blood with the ashes.

Sprinkle the ashes in 4 separate local bodies of water.

If you look online, you can probably find the service manual for your laptop and look up how to replace the hard drive. Take it out and have your way with it. Hammers, cars, acid, and many other items can be used to render one dead.

Take out the HD and beat it with the hammer to pieces, then burn. Scatter the ashes.

A lot of posters seem to be missing the fact that the OP stated they cannot get the drives out of the laptops....

And unless it's in the other thread (that the mods haven't combined with this one yet) the OP also hasn't told us what brand/model they are so we can track down the instructions for removing them.

The faster you go the behinder you get.
