Hey everyone, I have had my iMac for 2 years now. Purchased it with Snow Leopard and upgraded to Lion last year. The computer hasn't really been sluggish, but I have installed and deleted a lot of applications through out the two years. I'm sure the system is full of junk and not sure how to clean it up. What is the best way to clean up a Mac OS X? I know Mountain Lion is coming out this month and would like to upgrade my current system. Not sure if it would be wise to do a factory restore before hand. I use time machine so have apps, pics, and music back upped.

Any assistant would be wonderful! thank you

Couple of things to try first:

1. Open Disk Utility. Select your hard drive, then click 'Repair Disk Permissions'
2. Open Disk Utility. Select your hard drive, then on the 'Erase' tab choose 'Erase free Space'.
3. Reboot

thank you, I did what you said.

a.) is it wise to do a factory restore? I have my iPhone and iPod plugged into my mac, and software with serial codes. I don't know if a restore will mess that up.

b.) what should I be doing every month to keep my mac in "tip top shape"?

c.) what steps should be performed before upgrading to Mountain Lion?

Are you wanting to do factory restore of your computer or your phone? I wouldn't recommend a factory restore unless you are having serious issues. If you do a restore, then you will need to reinstall everything, so make sure you have the serial numbers and the software handy to restore it. On the same kind of note, however, you need to be backing up your system regularly. Maybe get an external harddrive and configure it for time machine. You can get a decent sized external hard drive for $100, and Time Machine will use it.

To keep it in 'tip top shape', I would do the other three things I said at first. I would also use ccleaner once a week or so.

Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.

You might also want to download ccleaner, and run that. Mac App Store - CCleaner

thank you brianjb for all of your help.

I downloaded iAntiviruis from Norton on the Mac App Store. Did a scan and found no threats to the computer. Is it worth investing into norton for mac for $40. or would you think the free software is enough?
