For those lags I've been getting while browsing Internet, it's sometimes a script that's lagging or unresponsive. Example:
[quote]A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: http://konac.kontera.com/javascript/...lashBase.js:28[quote]

Don't vacuum the fan & exhaust without first blocking the fan from turning. Use a bobby pin or something. I'm not sure whether fans can send current back through the mobo or not buy why take chances.

The whole computer was almost down to a crawl. I took out the battery and reset the original setting in Bios setup and it's running quite a bit faster. Still has a small lag but good enough for me. Thanks to all and especially SorryImovedback for the suggestions!

I was always dubious about that advice to do that thing with the battery and power switch and BIOS, but I've seen it offered so many times on the Toshiba forum that I just had to suggest it. I do know from running a AMD processor L505D-S6947 with a badly worn battery that any kind of flaky power results in the need for an occasional exorcism. Or complete discharge of capacitors. Or something like that. Defragging and maybe a rollback to last known good configuration, haha.

Since I just picked up the same model laptop, and I was rained out of working today, I did some more reading:
  • Running out of hard drive room for swap file, i.e. hard disk too full.
  • Power management especially economizing messing with networking Have a Toshiba Satellite A505-6030. Experienced major slow - JustAnswer offers some tuneups to speed up Internet connections.
  • Driver problems and /or damaged or incorrect system files -- fix w/ correct drivers and maybe a repair of Windows, without having to do a complete wipe and reinstall.

Their battery was new so I really don't think that had anything to do with it. And I was told the computer had been defragged multiples times so I'm not sure. I'm gonna print up your suggestion that I performed and give it to my sister so in case it happens again she may could give it a shot. Best of luck with your Toshiba. I have an old Satellitte that I gave to my dad and it runs pretty good. Kinda slow compared to today's laptops but works fine for his needs.

Default a caution re. memory upgrdes

Memory upgrades: Apparently, these Toshibas are more finicky than the average laptop regarding what RAM can be used.

6GB vs. only 4GB on this machine will make a big difference in how fast Windows loads and how fast the screens scroll for Internet browsing. But, people are having compatibility problems with RAM that's not bought from Toshiba. It's kind of hit-or-miss whether or not you can get two 4GB sticks of even the big brandnames' RAM to work, if you don't buy the RAM from Toshiba or get Kingston's best. (There is a Kingston RAM 4GB part number mentioned on the Toshiba forum, but I didn't think to copy or write it down. )

Toshibas are apparently very finicky about RAM. I didn't know that, and I bought a 4GB DDR2 stick from Crucial that was what Crucial picks for the L505D-S6947 Satellite, because that's the machine I already owned. Lucky for me, it seems to be compatible. I was able to pull the 1GB stick from the L505D and replace it w/ the Crucial 4GB stick, except that the original Samsung 2GB stick from Toshiba has to be in slot 1, and the Crucial 4GB stick in slot 2.

I ported those same two sticks to the A505-S6960 and the same thing is true: Crucial stick in the slot against the mobo, and the Samsung 2GB on the outside slot. If you reverse that, the machine will still post and will boot into Windows Vista, but will lock up while still loading startup programs. With the Crucial stick in slot 2 and Samsung in slot 1, I ran Memtest86 for 1 full pass and then probably half of another one, with no memory errors. The people who try for the full 8GB with RAM they don't buy from Toshiba are the ones having the probs. So, if adding RAM, make sure that what you buy can returned for a refund.

I read where some people bought 2 sticks directly from Crucial and it didn't work, but they RMA'd it back to Crucial and Crucial sent them some that did work.
