I have a Windows 7 computer which I've been using for eight weeks. This morning when I booted, it displayed the "Set Network Location" dialog box for no reason. I haven't changed any of my network settings. I selected Home and everything seemed to be okay. I rebooted and no, that box did not appear again.

Do you have any idea why that box popped up?? I did nothing the previous time that would cause it. It's always been set to Home. I have an older DSL modem and no wifi, and just one desktop computer and Norton.

(This is the same box that appears if I go to Control Panel > Networking and click on "Home.")

P.S. My Windows firewall is turned off. I turned it off right after I bought it.

Maybe your modem auto updated or got a new DNS entry or something.

Has this happened to you, specifically? I mean have you gotten the same box ever?

What does it mean to say a DSL modem auto updated? What would be updated on the modem?

I had a Vista computer with the same DSL modem for three years and never got that box - perhaps that box didn't exist in Vista.

Cable companies remotely update their equipment all the time.

I see that box daily, I work with about 300 PCs (it comes up for different reasons of course)

What are the reasons that box pops up during booting?
I mean, when it's supposed to pop up.

Regarding the modem, I have an older DSL modem so I'm not sure if it gets updated.

Operating systems are far from perfect, Windows can randomly lose a previously configured setting, adjustment, or in your case an approved network, unless it happens on a regular basis it's not a problem that needs a resolution.
