It is foolish, IMO, to blindly trust any software regardless of origin.

That said ... it looks like I will be dropping Ubuntu from my list of OSes to play with in the future unless this issue is fixed.

The issue appears to exist in Ubunto 12.10. Since I use the latest LTS (Long Term Support) version (12.04), and Xubuntu rather than Ubuntu with Gnome and Unity, my machines are not impacted.

Here is some more information about this issue. It's possible to turn this "feature" off, and there are other ways around it as indicated in this EFF article:
