What I would do: Buy the Win8 machine, if that's the least cost out of pocket. Set up some trivial email account at Hotmail or Live.com or whatever if Win8 makes you log in (the free consumer preview than I'm running does require a login.)

Then put free Classic Shell program (a download) on it, and set the menu option to Win7 or whatever you like. Use that to get around in Win8. Win8 boots up really fast even on a 1st generation i3 laptop, and it's instantly networked and ready to hit the Internet even if it's still loading other junk. You can turn off that Metro tile junk altogether, I believe, or leave it like I did.

Classic Shell will help you locate the tools and features you need, without ever having to actually learn Win8, lol.

Who says windows 8 is bad? Personal experience or something you've read?
Don't let a bunch of nay sayers discourage you from using it. I really like it.
Most complaints people have about it amount to nothing more than the fact its not Win 7.

If you can't afford an Apple, get a Chomebook. I wouldn't bother with Windows anymore. I mean, at this point, why?

I did a quick search for posts by Mr. Chromebook and found two here. Both recommended Chromebook. One horse rider?
