Great price! But what about toner costs? I'd rather pay more up front for the printer if it means cheaper toner.

I'd pay twice as much per page for a Brother to avoid dealing with HP's crappy drivers.

That's the first time I've heard HP PCL called crappy. What is about them that you dislike?

I like how HP's PCL drivers are streamlined and small without bloatware. And it beats other drivers that send rasterized images to the printer.

I use generic toner cartridges in my Brother machines. And a Chinese drum unit in the one I sent with my niece when she went to college. I have not managed to actually wear out or break any of the 4 Brother lasers I've owned.

The one I am totally "meh" about is MFC-7360N. It's not so great, but was low priced.

Not everyone needs the top of the line paper. We buy the cheapest we can find and have no problems with it. Of course we're not printing pictures or charts for business.
