I remember (and watched on youtube) quite a few. The astronaut and the eerie sound of the space surrounding it, the long-winded maze, the pipes, the flying Windows icons, flying toasters, 3d flower box and the scrolling marquee are all awesome. They seem to go back to the days of Windows 98.

Now on the more current systems, I see the bubbles and a couple others but just not as many. Are people nowadays not as fascinated by low-resolution coolness? Or are screensavers just going more and more the way of 3d and more complex-like the aquarium one-like that one too. It seems like the really "cool" screensavers now, you have to pay for.

Any way I could possibly get some of these "vintage-y" screensavers from the past (come on it's been like 15 years) downloaded into my system (I have Vista)?

I've tried some places but they all want you to sign up for special deals and stuff and then you're given another toolbar (which I see as clutter , anyway.)

Some of the ones you mentioned were not part of Windows and cost money, the space one was part of the Windows Pluspack I believe, the flying toasters was from a 3rd party company called AfterDark.

You can still download or buy screensaver/theme packs for Windows, just be careful of the malware included in some.

Because screen savers haven't served much purpose since green screens went away and most people would rather save electricity by having their display turn off after a period of inactivity.

I don't really use them myself anymore in favor of disable the monitors, but I've used these before (they are particularly cool on a double or triple monitor setup)

Really Slick Screensavers - hypnotic 3D eye candy

Think my DH has a Windows 98 disk that may show all the cool old-school low res graphics...

Right now the one "classic" screensaver that is still around is that one where text on the screen wobbles back and forth...you can change the writing in the text to your liking...I guess I will stick wth that for awhile.

Same with Mac OS X. I'm still running 10.6 Snow Leopard. But most of my best screen savers are no longer working. If I upgraded to 10.8, I'm sure most of the rest would be broken.

I think it's part of a bigger problem. People don't seem interested in developing anything for computers these days. Now it's all about mobile devices.

Screensavers are like floppy disks. A vintage curiosity.

If you are interested in a decently cool (and rarely the same twice) screensaver, look up Electric Sheep. What is neat about it is its all made up by your (and everyone else who has the screensaver) computer. I started using it about 6 months ago, I have seen a repeat maybe once or twice. It is a free screensaver so definitely worth looking up.
