come with a Recovery CD that one can use to erase the hard drive if you get a virus, etc.

So, how can I erase my hard drive then?

It has a recovery partition that will reset the C drive to factory conditions. You can also order a recovery DVD from HP. If you have a friend with a standard Windows DVD, that will work too. I'm assuming your new laptop has Windows 8 so there's no code to enter as its built-in to the system firmware. If you use a standard Windows DVD, you won't get any of HP's pre-loaded crapware, but you'll have to download drivers from them for anything that Windows doesn't recognize on its own.
