First thing this morning the computer would not boot up. Opened it up and there is power.... power supply light on, all fans on. The hdd wasn't doing anything.... so I figured, that's it, the hdd has finally gone.

Took an hdd out of a working pc and installed it in the failing pc. The failing pc started right up.
I removed the good hdd and put it back in its original pc.

Then I put back the hdd that I thought was bad back in the failing pc and tried it again. It came right up and has been running all afternoon.

You may had some slight corrosion on the connector that was causing problems. Removing it and putting it back on cleaned the connector. I've done that a hundred times.

So far it's looking good.

When I re-installed Vista from the OEM CD two days ago, the install created a Windows.old file (a saved copy of the previous Windows). Today I deleted it using Disk Cleanup and reclaimed that space on the hdd.

I'm considering this one closed, unless...........
