I'm running Unbuntu Linux 14.04 LTS on an Acer Aspire 5515 laptop. It runs pretty well, except for DVDs. I've got VLC Media Player, but my machine won't play any DVDs. Any suggestions?

I've used Fedora and Ubuntu. I preferred Ubuntu but that was years upon years ago.

Make sure all the codecs are installed too in addition to the actual VLC player. I believe Ubuntu has something similar to YaST on the SUSE distro that makes it easy to find & install stuff from the repositories (https://askubuntu.com/questions/4168...st-on-opensuse).

I've got OpenSUSE Leap 42.5 in a VM and am working off & on trying to get my CAC reader to work in it. The middleware was the easy part, all I had to do was use YaST to load what Google said it needed. The annoying part is getting the right plugin loaded into Firefox so it'll actually login to work sites via CAC. Once I can get a solution to that I'll be ready to use SUSE as the primary OS on my laptop.

do this: go to your terminal, copy and paste the commands in red below and then restart you computer. Should work then. These codecs come preinstalled in Linux Mint, but have to be installed in Ubuntu.

How can I play encrypted DVD movies?

My machine can't play encrypted DVDs on a fresh install. How do I add this capability? Another useful bit of information would be what programs are best for playing DVDs, once I'm able to do so. See the similar question here. Will I be able to play DVD movies from any region?

To Enable Playback:
  1. Install libdvdread4:
    sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
  2. Then install libdvdcss:
    1. Ubuntu 15.10 onward
      sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg
    2. Ubuntu 12.04 to 15.04
      sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
    (More about libdvdcss here.)

Ubuntu for casual desktop use. Although it has been a while, I had Kali but there were occasional audio problems with that were very annoying.
