I have an older model laptop that is connected to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Whenever I put the computer into Sleep mode I am unable to wake it using the mouse or keyboard. I have to open up the laptop and push the power button. Is this strictly controlled by the BIOS (I don't see a "wake from USB" setting), or is there a third party application I can install to make this work?

You have the external keybd/mouse connected via USB right? Could it be that the laptop has powered off the USB ports when it went into power saving mode? You can try to go to Device Mgr and uncheck this ability in the USB Controller Properties.

Yes, I'm using a USB mouse and keyboard. I went into the Device Manager and there are a bunch of "USB Root Hub" controllers. I unchecked the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device". There is another option that says "Allow this device to wake computer", but it is unchecked and grayed out so I can't select anything.

When mine gets stubborn I try:

1. Tap the space bar a time or two
2. Tap the power button lightly/a short tap. Just enough to make the laptop pay attention. Not enough to shut down.

If you continue to have the problem check the hibernation settings. They will cause problems that sleep mode doesn't.

Edit: Hmmm. Reread the OP. You don't want to do either of those. You want to start it using the usb kb or mouse.

I'd still check and turn off all hibernation.
