Sounds like you do not have ad blocker. Never see them myself and use explorer 10.Most virus programs have ad blocker if enabled.

Are these pop ups in a separate browser window?

Or are they embedded on the page?

There is very few ads on this site at least for me and certainly no pop ups.

I've never seen an ad on C-D either. Pop-ups virtually ceased for me once I installed AdBlock software. About the only pop-up I ever get is a weird informational-type window that opens up (usually behind newspapers I'm reading) that talks about some kind of heater that will cut my energy bills. It's a separate window that I don't see until I close what I'm reading. Happens maybe once a week at most.

AdBlock doesn't stop the AdChoice boxes that appear in the margins of some websites. In fact, those often slow down websites from loading (I see maybe half a website's info and a tag that says "waiting for AdChoice"). I always leave the website when that happens. I'm not going to WAIT for ads. The one thing that annoys me most is video ads that play without me clicking on them. Nothing sends me away from a website faster than a commercial such as those on TV. I get that websites need advertising support, but isn't it enough that I see ads like in paper magazines? Now they want me watch and listen to stuff about cars? I'm not playing.

You also might want to install and run MalWare Bytes to make sure you don't have any adware/spyware installed.

Yes, that's free software that has gotten me out of more than one jam over the years. Now I run it very couple of months just to check. Spyware in insidious.

Another method is to obtain a host file that contains most of the ad agencies URL's. Nice thing about this approach is it often will be seamless in how it works. That is, I have friends who will say "what is up with xyz site and its advertisements?" and I will not have noticed because their sites look normal due to the host file cutting out the garbage. It also will speed up your connections and is an additional layer in reducing malware.

It isn't "perfect" as there are some sites that will check if you are resolving the ad URL's and then refuse to allow you service until you unblock them (exp HULU), but for the most part you either see a HTTP Error or the site simply absorbs it into its background.
