Recently I'm experiencing the disappearance of emails stored in a variety of folders. The same thing happened about a year ago so I freaked out and stopped using that email, started using Malwarebytes and found some trojans. Here's what has been floating around in my thoughts. Shortly before it happened last year, I made contact with a relative I haven't seen since we were kids. She is now disabled and before disability worked as a computer tech. We exchange lots of emails with links, most of it on cats, dogs, cute stuff.

It's just creepy that all those emails have disappeared. Emails that vanished are those that had anything to do with our relatives, emails I sent to myself containing attachments of all my Word and Excel docs that I want to backup, and a variety of other entire folders being emptied while the folder itself remains.

Is it possible she has sent me something that gives her access to my computer when I'm online? If so, how can I find it and get rid of it? Right now I'm on a laptop that I don't use very often and using it now in hopes it is safe. The email this time is gmail and last year also gmail. A side note - I don't keep any passwords stored in computers.

I doubt anything nefarious is going on.
I know of no Malware that randomly deletes email from Google's servers and if there was one I doubt it would target older email.
Make sure you don't have AutoArchive turned on:

I noticed the All Mail thing while browsing all the folders. I thought it was something gmail did along with creating two new tabs for incoming mail - Primary, Social and Promotions. Certain emails automatically go to those new folders. I searched All Mail for the missing emails but none of them there. Since gmail gave me the All Mail, it must have also somehow deleted emails and they were not old.

I will turn All Mail off and take another look at all the settings. Thanks for replying!!!

If it were me, I would reformat. I use all of the tools incl MB, but reformat wipes all.

And if I were the OP I would ignore the exceedingly poor advice given by the previous poster.

This is why I use an email program on my PC (Outlook) and download all emails to it. I leave email on Gmail then I selectively delete email for both. I have a backup in case Google does something stupid.
