Other than taking our two laptops to a professional shop, what's the best way to import all our photo files, IE favorites, & documents from MS Works onto our Windows 8.1 laptop? If I use a USB cable to connect the 2 computers, how difficult would it be to transfer files from the old to the new computer? Personally, I could delete virtually all the photos since the most important ones are already on a CD and prints. Wife is a photo hoarder.

Why don't you simply pull the hard drives out and place them in external cases and trash the old laptops? External cases are available on ebay for under $10 each.

Windows easy transfer works great. Best with a cable and not over a network. It really is easy.

The Windows Easy Transfer feature works only when you transfer the files and settings from Windows 8, Windows RT or Windows 7. It does not work with Windows Vista.

That's what I was thinking. You can only use WET for the move when moving up a single version of Windows. Vista to 8 is 2 versions.

Thanks for the additional info.

So as I said in #2, I'll continue with:

Thus we have couple of options in this case. If you want to transfer personal files, you can back up all the files on the Windows 8.1 computer (old PC) to an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or DVD and then move them manually to the location you want on your new Windows 8.1 PC. Make sure that the drive or disc has enough space to hold everything you want to move.

Ah... The single subversion limitation is new with Windows 8.1. You can go multiple versions before.
