Bought four HPs over the last 10 years. No issues. Two were laptops. The first was top end the others midlevel machines.

I'll leave it at that.

As others have pointed out, it is most likely the touchpad settings. My newer HP laptop did exactly as you described until I adjusted the touchpad settings to my liking. I may have even installed an updated/better driver for it but can't remember for sure. I did it all the first day I had it. One thing you probably needed to do was set it to disable while you are typing so the edges of your hands don't cause mouse clicks and scrolling while you are typing. You most likely returned two perfectly good laptops. I am very happy with my HP and I got it with windows 7 just before that piece of junk 8 came out.

I'm happy with my Lenovo G580 and it's their cheapest model laptop. It has Windows 7 and it does the kind of things I want to do--reading, research, email, photos, facebook.

What exactly is it doing? I recall a review of Windows 8 making a comment that the user thought the touchpad/mouse was a problem but it turned out to just be the fact that Windows 8 had difficulty telling the difference between a "drag" of the cursor and a "swipe".

There's usually an icon by the clock in the system tray for quick access to it...

I bought two Toshibas laptops and have liked both of them. Even bought my mom one like my own.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z575 laptop. Windows 7. I've had it for over a year now and I've been happy with it, no problems.
