I need to buy a new printer. Everyone says (Consumer Reports, PCMAG, Laptop Mag, etc) that epson and canon make the best printers. However, they didnt say which brand is better? Which one do you think I should buy?

To me, the more important question is what type of printer should you buy, rather than what brand. I see far too many people buying inkjet printers when 99% of the printing they want to do is documents. Documents should be printed on a laser printer. The cost-per-page is dramatically lower on laser printers than inkjet.

I own an Epson inkjet printer and a Brother laser printer. I picked each because it was deeply discounted at the time and had the features I was looking for.

We have had two Canon Pixma printers and both were troublesome. My husband just called up and yelled a few weeks ago and they sent us the latest Pixma printer as a replacement. So far it seems to be better than the last two but time will tell. They have at least improved the design re where the paper goes in (I think--I haven't used it yet but my husband said something about that.)

This newest one is a Pixma MG3500.

I replaced an old HP printer last December with a Canon Pixma MG3222. I'm very happy with it. Nice design and easy to use. I also appreciate that there isn't the bogware issue I had previously.

It depends on what your usage will be, and your budget, to determine what is best for you. Photos: Epson inkjet. Everything else: Brother Lasers.

Usually the cheaper is the printer, the more expensive will be ink cartridges. Your purchase should consider how much you're going to print, and how often you will need to buy new cartridges.
Check online available printers and read reviews.

When you look there are so many printers out there in both brands and models at different price levels consumer reports etc a only test so many. Even then the test is new machine for limited time. Kind of like driving a new car and then ten years later differences on it.
