I saw that Ipod nanos have only the lightning connector and Ipod touch has the dock connector.
How are you supposed to attach these to a Windows computer that has USB ports?

Apple - iPod touch - Technical Specifications

Wasn't there an earlier time when Ipods did have a USB connector?

The other end of the cable is a regular USB connector.

The devices have worked with USB since the 3rd generation iPod was released in 2003.

The MacBook Pro has a "USB 3" port - is it different from the usual USB you'd see on a Windows computer??

Apple - MacBook*Pro with Retina display - Technical Specifications

When you say "regular USB" don't you mean the one on most Windows computers?

Oops, USB ports/cables come in different shapes and sizes including A (also called Standard A), which I think is the one on all Windows or Mac computers.

USB 3 or USB 2 refers to the speed and not the shape of the plug.

My (old) digital camera has mini USB on one end and regular at the other.
