I have a very old laptop that is ready to be sent to the recycle bin. Does anyone know of a good, free application that will overwrite the hard disk for security?

Download DBAN from the link above. Burn it to a CD, boot from the CD and say goodbye to the data in your hard drive,

Do that, then remove hard drive and smash it with a hammer - wear goggles.

That is the best method if the HD will not be re-used.
I use a strong screw driver and a hammer, once the screw drivers hits the data platters, they typically shatter like glass.

A 30-06 at 500 feet is more fun. Especially if you tape the drive to a tub of tannerite.
