I've never had a problem doing it. The best way, as mentioned previously, is go to control panel power options and set the power button to shut down when pressed. It will then properly shut down the computer. The hold the power button for a few seconds until it goes off, is the one where it supposedly is improperly shut down. I've never had an issue, but doing the first option is clearly better.
All right. I'm being forced into the second question. My friend says that, on Win 7, you must not shut down using the power button. It will cause other problems. So, has anyone who has Win 7 shut down this way with no problems next time you booted up?

Holding the button is the same as pulling the power cord, don't do it unless you have to, tapping the button initiates a normal shutdown.

Actually at that point you have a menu pop-up displayed
use the keyboard to type the Wunderlined letter for Switch User option
Next screen, Tab key enough to Tab to the red shutdown button in lower right
when it's highlighted, press Enter
then Tab to Yes or whatever
then Enter again
I didn't go through the actual process. But that's close enough that you can figure out the exact steps. I have a broken left mouse button on my favorite Toshiba's keypad. It's probably time for a new laptop, but for now, I just bought a cheap lil' USB mouse and that suffices.

Your friend may not realize that tapping the button and holding the button aren't the same thing.
Never knew about the 4 seconds, does that work if the computer is crashed and you got nothing including tapping the power button?
Really? Method has been around for ages, hold the button until the computers powers off, hung or locked up it will power off.
