If Windows 8 should get us an extra "x" number of years of support and updates, over Windows 7, maybe that would be the best way. Unless 7 is their best O/S ever.
I don't care what they do, 7 is where I'm staying.
XP loses support and Windows updates 4-8-2014, so XP users will slowly have to move up the Bill Gates food chain. Windows 7 will probably last you several more years before Microsoft pulls the plug on it.
Anyone with advantages and disadvantages of one over the other?
I have Vista and can wait on 9.0 if needed.
Windows 7. I gave Windows 8 a chance on my new computer purchased several weeks ago, but it was Just. Awful. I can see making full use of it on a tablet or a computer with a touchscreen monitor. But for regular desktop or laptop use, its interface interferes with productivity far too much for my tastes. After living with it for awhile and trying to give it a fair shake, I just couldn't stand it anymore and went through the huge hassle of getting rid of it--the thing is worse than a virus when you're trying to upgrade (no, I didn't use the wrong term there) to Windows 7.
With Windows 8, the operating system got in the way of what I was trying to do. Its charm menu lacked familiarity and didn't provide immediate access to Windows tools I use. It also seemed to be actively "hiding" administrative options I need, treating me as if I were a three year old and forcing me to jump through hoops to find and use various tools. It was neither familiar nor intuitive.
Having Windows 8 on my new computer was like getting behind the wheel of a sleek muscle car and finding out that not only does it have an automatic transmission, but also the speed is artificially limited to 45mph for your safety. No thanks.

Use both equally on a daily basis.
Skip 8 and go directly to 8.1. The improvements in the UI are worth it.
You makje it sound like 2 completely different things. If anyone CAN still buy 8... within a week of owning it you will be prompted to get the free 8.1 update. DO they even sell 8? That wouldn't make sense...
