I have a Windows 8 machine at home and hate it! I've used 'normal' microsoft so long I just can't seem to adapt.
Anyway, through a govt program i can buy and download MS office pretty cheap, so I did that....
and now I can't find it. There's no shortcut icon on my desktop, there's no Windows 8 box thing, can't find it in the folders. It doesn't ask you where or how you want to save it. Nothing seems to in W8.
I suppose it might not have downloaded but how do I know?
I'm not this much of a moron with non Windows 8.........please help
The Search mode is accessed by clicking on an open space in the blue background. Have you tried that?
You will probably wind up arranging your desktop the way you did in normal Windows, and then immediately clicking on your desktop icon as soon as you boot up, and ignore all the other BS. If it makes you feel less like you are in kindergarten, I think you can even hide all the icons except desktop on your startup screen, and then reset the few that you might actually use as desktop icons or pin them in the taskbar. Instead of being bashed over the head with gaudy bloatware billboards every time you boot up.

If you're going to just click on "desktop" every time you start Windows, it would be better to just boot straight to the desktop. Go to "Taskbar and Navigation" in your Control Panel, go to the "Navigation" toolbar and check the "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" option and hit OK.

Because that is not intuitive. We are talking to a Windows 8 user here, (who has previous experience in a desktop environment) and even finding Control Panel is a daunting challenge that might remain to be overcome. However, with perseverance, it is possible to find the Desktop icon on the candy-shop display. Nobody thought of packing inside the box a handy little manual consisting of the ten most essential and obvious things that an unfamiliar user is going to have to know how to do before digesting hours of online tutorials. All you get is a big piece of glossy paper the size of a road map, with a picture of a plug going into a wall, along with all of the government mandated safety warnings in 48 languages.
