I recently picked up a copy of Windows 7 and on the box it says,

" Each individual software license inside this package many ONLY be distributed with a fully assembled computer system."

What does this mean, I can't install this on my computer unless I bought a computer with the software???

Will the product key not work on my computer?

It sounds strange, I've never heard of this before.

It is an OEM license. The key should work for a clean install. If you replace/upgrade major hardware on the PC you use this copy for down the road you may or may not have a problem getting it reactivated.

It's an OEM license. You have to purchase it with a piece of hardware and it's tied to. As long as you are using that hardware, you can use your Windows 7 license. If you throw away that hardware or move it to another computer, the copy of Windows 7 goes with it.

That being said, if you purchased it without hardware, you cannot legally use your copy of Windows 7. Hopefully this is not the case.

Typical legal mumbo gumbo ...
What if you buy it *not fully assembled* - just parts - assemble at your own time ?

Since it *only can be a fully assembled system*, when you want to build it yourself, you will thus never be able to get that kind of license ?

Any legalities have never been tested in court, what you stated is a violation of the license agreement, whether it's legal or illegal has never been put to the test AFAIK.

Simple. It just means that the software cannot be used on a partially assembled computer system.

From what I gathered, that is exactly the case here. He had the PC already with whatever was installed on it and then later on, he purchased this copy of Windows 7.

The whole hardware tied software is a hogwash as far as I am concerned. It should be tied to an individual, just as long as the number of systems the license is good for was not exceeded.

OP, what MS doesn't know won't hurt them. If anyone asks, as far as you know, they came together (it was a match made in software heaven).

There are licenses that allow you to do just that. The discounted oem licensing is great when it fits your needs, but when it doesn't, you have options.

I used to think that you worked for MS, but now I'm pretty sure. Now, can you explain to me why MS will let you install OEM on a personal computer for Windows 8, but not for Windows 8.1?
Windows system builder licensing for personal use
