I have a Nexxtech external hard drive. I rarely use it. Sometime in the past year, I turned it on, plugged it into my laptop, and was able to access the files just fine. Read some, deleted some.

This week, I plugged it in, turned it on (blue light comes on when the switch is in "on" position), connected it to my laptop, but nothing comes up when I view my libraries on my laptop (Lenovo Ideapad running Windows 7). Moved the USB connection around to all the available ones on my laptop, still no change.

Any thoughts on how to know if I will be able to get my files off this thing? TIA

could be that USB is not working for that device. One of two things often helps. 1. move to a different usb port on the computer if you have one. 2. Reboot with the drive on. You could also look through device manager to see if it's connecting, but that only diagnoses, does not fix.

Also, never hurts to try a different usb cable.

Assuming your external disk is a spinning drive (and not an SSD), put your ear up against it and see if you can hear it spinning up when you plug it in. No sound means the drive is probably kaput.

I think NexxTech just provides the enclosure for the actual HDD that's inside. Clicking sound is not a good sign ... it's commonly known as the Click of Death. It might be the drive is not getting enough power to spin up but most likely the head is stuck or is crashing. If there's valuable data on there, you might want to consult a professional data recovery company. How old is this drive?

thanks.... I'm trying to remember how old this thing is.... Its got to be, at a minimum, six years old. Probably older than that though. I bought it used off Craigslist.

The last time I turned it on, I moved some important files to my cloud back-up storage. Thankfully!!!

I can't remember what else is on there...except that my entire old Itunes library was on there. Clearly that wasn't very important to me, as I never moved it to my new computer, or even listened to it.

Usually the click click click click means it's done for.
