called HP to get help with computer and they said the hard drive has to be replaced, but I don't have warranty with them anymore, expired long time ago, when I put the new hard drive on the laptop, does this mean I will automatically be able to use the laptop and it will go to desktop for me to be able to use, or do I have to install it? and do I have to install Windows Vista? Does this mean I have to buy it even though the laptop already came with it? I only have recovery cds so it will go back to original form. Also, is the hard drive the only place where information is stored?

New hard drives are empty unless it's purchased from the computer mfg. pre-loaded. You will have to reinstall Windows and any applications you need.

Your recovery CD's will reload what ever version of Windows your laptop shipped with, if you want to load something else like Windows 7 you'll have to purchase it.

The hard drive is usually the only internal storage medium.
