I have a Samsung Chromebook and it has already been around the world. Paid for itself many times. It only has Wi-fi; there is no RJ-45 slot for ethernet connection. It does have 2 usb ports. My new apartment in three weeks will have cable internet, and I will use my motorola surfboard modem. It is not wireless. What is a simple cheap way for me to connect? If I should just buy the wireless router...remember that I don't have a dvd/cd drive to install the software. So something like LAN to usb??? Thanks in advance!!!

Contrary to popular belief, routers do not require software to be installed on any computer, you just need to set it up manually, which is very simple.

But they would most likely need an ethernet port to connect to the router to do the initial configuration via a browser.
Not all router ship with WiFi enabled (and broadcasting) by default upon power up, the WiFi needs to enabled first (some have hardware button, but not all). They need an ethernet connection to the router to enable the WiFi.
The OP asked for a cheap option, an USB ethernet adapter runs around $10 vs a minimum of $20 for a basic router which might all might not be initially configurable over WiFi.
If the router has WiFi enabled by default, it can be configured via the Chromebook via the management interface at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

I just bought a chromebook and it connected to my router easily without any software.
You can also use software such as Ralink's to create a hot spot conroolled by your computer to avoid router WiFi.
