Hello -- I was hoping I could please ask for some technical and hardware advice on my latest test server rig. Basically, I have a high-end, HP z820 workstation that doubles as a test server box for me, with the following specs:
The issue I am running into is, the z820 accepts Win 7 drivers on Windows 7, but will not install all available drivers successfully on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012. When I try to install Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012, some devices show up in the "!" section of the Device Manager, and Windows Server will also not accept Windows 7 drivers for them, in their place. Do you think that this could be successfully resolved, if I was to hypothetically install the latest Windows Server OS, Server 2012 R2? The reason I ask is because even though Server 2012 was not able to recognize all the devices, it still recognized significantly more devices than Server 2008 R2?
I'd start by looking at the hardware ID of each device that's missing a driver to figure out what it is, then do some googling to see if you can track down drivers.
If it is just a test, why not virtualized it, unless that is what you are testing.
I want to be able to be build the environment from scratch, on the physical hardware -- since I already have the physical hardware, I guess I figured it would be more fun to build it, instead of virtualizing it. (Plus, unfortunately I do not really have much of a working technical knowledge of building virtual machines, at this point in time at least.)
Start with a simple one that runs on top of Windows 7. Think of virtualization just like an application such as Outlook. You run setup.exe, you then get an icon that you click on. Now press the Green button to turn on the virtual machine and you'll see a screen booting up just like you turned on your computer and see the HP screen, but instead it might say VMWARE. Proceed like you would turning on fresh machine, put in the DVD and go install your OS.
