I need to take some pictures off a digital camera so I tried to connect it via the USB port on my Windows 7 PC but it did not recognize it like the old Windows XP used to do, so I looked under "Device Manager" and I saw "Portable Device" is not listed.
I wonder why and how do I get it?

There may not be an item called portable device even when it's working properly, what you should get is a drive letter assigned so you can access the camera photos. Read the camera manual, some require they be put into storage or USB mode.

Are all of the pics on a separate card ?
If yes, then use the card only ?
(if your unit has a card reader)
