We strongly recommend that you install Windows 8.1 Update or Windows RT 8.1 Update (KB 2919355). This is a critical update that is required for future updates to Windows. If you prevent it from installing or you uninstall it, you won’t get future bug fixes, security updates, and new features. In some cases, if you uninstall this update from a new PC after signing in with a Microsoft account, OneDrive might not work as expected.
Microsoft enterprise users now have until August, instead of May, to move to the 'Update' versions of Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Embedded 8.1 in order to continue to receive future fixes and updates.

As for Windows being a failure all the way back to '93, I can't atop laughing. Windows is a product of a business. That business (Microsoft) has done everything but fail.

You misunderstood that poster when he said "every other". He meant that XP worked, Vista didn't, 7 did, 8 hasn't worked well, etc.

I have no idea what point you're trying to make here. It's fine when you have to upgrade to run some particular piece of software as long as it's Android or some Linux distro, but not when you have to upgrade Windows or OS X to run some piece of software?
Why are Microsoft and Apple expected to provide support for old versions forever, but Google can go on merrily introducing new APIs and deprecating old ones? I would argue it's an even bigger issue for Android devices, since companies have a dismal record of shipping current versions and offering updates.
Since I run W7 and avoided W8 this thread is not relevant to my world. Hint: if I had to buy a lap or desktop I would simply "downgrade" (laughable term) to W7. Problems solved. Reminds me the Vista fiasco.
I had to buy a new laptop this morning. That's bad enough, the time it takes to get used to one and clean out all the crap but now I have to try to do it with the Win 8.1 that it came with.
I don't mind learning something new but so far I hate,hate, hate it!
Can I really downgrade back to 7?
