A my extended family (parents and sister's family) has gotten a bunch of years out of a number of inexpensive Toshibas.
My wife's HP died suddenly a few months ago, and there was a Toshiaba with really nice specs on sale so I grabbed it, and it's been a great laptop so far.
Every brand has had its problems. I have been extremely pleased with HP laptops with the exception of one. The bad one was the DV6000 my wife had. You can google that model and read thread after thread of people complaining about them. The two major problems were the charger connection port was easy to break loose from the board and the design of the cooling ducts clogged with lint easily which lead to overheating. Hers had both problems, which I fixed myself once and finally just canned it after 3 years.
I still have an old HP from 2002 that works but I have finally stopped using it. My current laptop is a HP DM4 and I am very pleased with it.
Toshiba had a lot of overheating issues with their laptops back about 5 years ago but I think that has been resolved.
I usually go look at laptops in stores where I can pick them up and check them out. I pick a few I like and then go do research on them for known issues. I never, ever buy a brand new model that doesn't have reviews and feedback online yet. Usually a model has been out at least a year before I would consider buying it.
Toshiba is at the top of the list of mfg's that load excessive bloatware.
You know, I honestly expected it to be crammed full, and didn't really have that much.
I will say that the HP before it had a lot, but it had a factory restore option to do a third party free install (although it still installed all of HP's own crapware).
I hate Toshiba. My wife used to have one and the screen kept blacking out for no reason. They also seem to have a cheap, bulky, plastic feel. I would never buy one.

I think it depends upon the price point. My wife's last HP was very cheap and flexible (but it was a cheap $600 laptop), the new Toshiba was a couple hundred more, and is mostly aluminum (including the keys on the keyboard).
