You could probably put your hard drive in an external enclosure. After reading what someone said about extra voltage to the components, I wouldn't want to use it as my main drive. The memory which you bought is probably non ECC, meaning it is cheap and you would rather pay less upfront than have more expensive memory with more features.
The OP's computer in used condition still sells for $500 - $800 used on eBay.

Here's a used one that SOLD for $850 last week:

Dell Studio XPS 9100 Intel Core i7 980X Extreme | eBay

Currently computers with Win7 actually get a premium price compared to those with Win8, but people who are not in the know tend to overpay when they get into a bidding war w/o thinking.

But here is one that sold for $385:

The one that sold for $850 was purchased with Buy It Now. No bidding war.

And I'm not saying they all sell for over $800.

But many of the XPS 9100 currently sell for $500 and up in used condition.

Here's another used one that sold this week with 1 bid for $600 + 80 to ship:

So this is not a computer I would simply "trash".

If it were mine .. I'd put a little more money into solving the graphics card problem, by getting a very cheap used low-end video card to use for testing, as I mentioned in a previous post.
