A 1TB Western Digital Blue is $60. A 500GB one is $55. Why would someone buy a 500GB when someone can spend $5 more for an extra 500GB? I have seen people who are building computers around Fairfield County who use 500GB hard drives.l

Because the bigger the drive the harder (and faster) they fail.

My 1TB external drive failed in a matter of months. Two internal 500GB drives are flawless though many years old.

That's purely anecdotal and not true. Maybe if you had a 5 platter drive vs a 1 platter drive it'd make a difference, but apples to apples, size don't matter.

I think the OP's thread title is written incorrectly. From the post itself it should read

Why Would Someone Buy A Hard Drive < 1TB?

Moderator cut: Title has been re-worded

Why Would Someone Buy A Hard Drive < 1TB?

For the same reasons people would spend more gas to find a gas station that sells gas for 2 pennies less ...

When every penny counts, people in general do not look for the rest of the story !

Only when you are comparing dollars vs. GB, then ...

I think it depends on needs. I have 1 TB HD, and over 35K pictures stored there. It's already 1/3 full...

I know why my workplace does it. They'd rather save the $5.

Because they wouldn't even come close to using 500 gig? All my business computers have solid state drives. I upgraded a couple that were very early 40 gig SSDs to anywhere from 80 to 160 gigs and they will not be running out of space for a very long time with what the PCs are used for.

Not everybody downloads every movie they can find.

Reminds me of the offers at McDonalds. One Sandwich $3, get a second one for 30 cents more. Ah, no thanks. I only want one.

My computer is over two years old. 500gig HD. 30% full.

For one thing, I could really use the storage, and direct resources, of backing up. The drive wont fail only with incorrect usage of it.
