Thanks, I'll check the browsers. Wouldn't it be odd for all three to have the same issue?

I powered down the modem and router, and that worked for approximately 30 seconds, enough time to open 2 web pages. Then back to not working again.

Argh. I'm going to go blind using this dang phone all day.

Not at all, did you check your internet settings to see if a proxy was enabled as swagger suggested?

Swagger's suggestion is a good one. I've seen the proxy service left behind after malware was removed.

Thanks for your help; everything is up and running again.

I don't know what exactly the problem was; I ran anti-virus and anti-malware scans - which detected no problems - reset all the browsers back to their default settings, restarted the computer ... and voila.

Kinda like the old Mac Plus days when you could just slap the computer on its side, and it would run just fine from then on.

Thought I'd bump this thread to report that this keeps happening. Does anyone have any idea why, and what I can do to prevent it? I'm beyond frustrated.

The only common occurrence I see is that the browsers lose their functionality after an automatic update. What am I downloading????

Thanks for any help.

What is the update? i.e., is it from Microsoft or other 3rd party vendor?

What anti-virus/other scans are you running that seems to be causing the trouble?

What is your installed anti-virus?

Anti virus: Norton and Malwarebytes. The scans pick up no issues.

The updates are just the usual system updates. I've set the computer to not install them automatically so I might figure out the problem. Maybe. This had happened three or for times in the last month, and at least twice it happened after installing some updates, but I have no idea of that's what's causing the trouble.

Are you running 8.0 or 8.1? What other anti-whatever programs (other than Norton and Malwarebytes) do you have loaded on the computer right now (even if not using)? Which Norton are you running (A/V, NIS, 360, Comcast version).

Run the following link from the furthest point in your home and again near the router. Report both numbers here and their locations.

XFINITY Speed Test

Sorry, I didn't see your response. Thank you for responding. Here's what I can tell you:

Windows 8.0; no other anti-whatever programs, Norton is Norton Internet Security.

Near the router:

Ping 12 ms, dowload speed 84.41 mbps, upload speed 11.53 mbps

Away from the router:

14, 19.22, 5.17

Update or uninstall/reinstall the driver for your laptop's wifi card is another suggestion.

Comcast has a forum: Home Networking / Router / & WiFi Gateway Help - Comcast Help and Support Forums

I have Time Warner so I'm no help. lol
