I once had a WordPress blog about biking. Just a few pages about my bicycles and biking tips in general. Some pages eventually did get good SEO search page results in Google. But the biggest problem in my blog was spam comments unrelated to the topic I posted about. I wanted constructive feedback on the topics I talked about, yet most of the time I got spam advertising a product sale website or so. I donated $24 a year for Askimet, but it was nearly useless as it seemed that it would throw about every comment into the SPAM folder, even good comments. I still had to waste too much time processing comments.

So I look at other blogs and see many of them with comments, and good comments related to the topic! How do they do that if their blog has automatic commenting and spam filtering like WordPress + Askimet? It's too much of a time consuming waste to process comments for approval.

What blog system / spam filtering system should I use for my new website that will have some commenting? Or should I just avoid all automatic commenting systems and have comments emailed to me directly, to be posted manually?

I don't use WordPress but I see the have a plugin for Stopforumspam.com

I'm using a custom script on my forum, blocks about 750 to 1000 registrants per day, success rate for the spammers is probably about 1:5000 and I'm fairlyconfident false positives are almost 0 if not 0 . I get a few per week that are successful but it's unlikely you'll see that kind of traffic.

If you know how to program and can run cron jobs I'll post the script but you'll need to adjust for Wordpress.

I use Akismet on dozens of sites, and have never seen it put legitimate comments in spam.
