Today I wanted to open an excel sheet and got a pop-up window that the .xls file format is not valid. I opened that document many times before.
WTH?? I need that document...

I was wondering, seemed like an awful simple question for you

We have to cover the bases though, I don't assume anything

Well, I solved it partially by converting the file and opening it in... Word. But I am still wondering, and looking for answers...

I'm assuming you don't have that problem with any other .xls file?

If the file is corrupt, just try and recover the "data" using a different software and then re-convert it into an Excel file.

Open it with Google spreadsheets or something. If that doesn't work - maybe trying opening it using some statistical software (most of them read excel files).

<meh> I often think Microsoft software is DESIGNED to self-destruct. The .XLS format requirements changed so many times in the mid 1990s that I refused to do export data files to fit it and went with CSV and flat files instead. If you modified an .XLS file with a different build of Excel, there is no guarantee that your older version will read it.

The file worked just great two days ago, and I didn't do any changes to my computer. Also I was able to open it in Word.
So, I have the file now, just need to create a new spread sheet...
Still, I think it's odd, how a file can get bad practically overnight, or why .xls is not a valid (excel) file format.
Normally, when file is corrupted, I would get a pop-up window saying co.
