Moving forward (I think)... repairman came by last evening... no help there. He said it was a virus. Later, I remembered I have Avast setup from downloading and using at one time, but, had uninstalled. I began the installation..... alas! Had forgotten it downloads Google Chrome without asking and Chrome becomes my browser. So, then I downloaded Yahoo Messenger which I'd wanted to do, but couldn't... then Avast didn't alert to any problems. Ran Microsoft Security Essentials full scan which found several Trojans... one being Trojan download. They are now gone. I got nervy and hit that reset button.

When Chrome was the browser I also downloaded Opera and that is now my browser. I detest that Chrome thinks it doesn't have to ask.

You are 'asked' about Chrome before downloading. You can uncheck it.

There have been times I've been asked. This time I was not asked. Had I been asked I would have unchecked it. It also made itself my default browser without permission.

Did you do the express install or custom?

Installation of what? Today, a Microsoft tech began working on it and we begin again in the morning. I've exhausted my energies and have put it in his lap. He says he can fix it and that's what I want. I tried doing it with help here and there to no avail. Whatever I do just seems to create one more problem. Both my main email programs are no longer accessible. Facebook is closed to me, so I can no longer see my grandchildren's photos. It's insane and all because of trying to do it myself with assistance. I'm reasonably intelligent and somewhat computer savvy (more than many of my friends, but whatever has taken this machine over is way beyond my help. I very much appreciate various help I've been given in the past, but whatever this current problem is is far more complicated and that's how it is. For now, I'm outta here.

I think the cause has always been whatever malware is on your machine, your actions trying to fix it have nothing to do with it. I can't see it first hand, though.

I'm sure you are correct. The upshot today is the Microsoft techs can't figure it out and I've managed to get a refund of the $100. spent for their help... all of it was an ordeal because I have a difficult time understanding their English. I suppose their native tongue is Chinese.

Their last suggestion was send it to the manufacturer. I'm going to junk it, buy a new machine and solve it that way.

Why not restore to factory settings?
