I print all the time from both to my Brother printer.

iPrint & Scan | Brother

Other companies have this as well. Very easy to use.

Yes, I realize everything I do could be done on a laptop, BUT even my laptop's 17" screen is too small for displaying some of the work I do or things I need to read online, AND getting to my laptop's one and only CD drive is more annoying than just reaching over to my desktop's tower and putting in a CD.

I've been doing a ton of writing lately on both my laptop and desktop, and I know for a fact that the type of keyboard makes a big difference -- fewer typos (thus more efficiency) on the desktop keyboard, which is one reason I bought an external keyboard for one of my laptops, and the bigger monitor in my face means I catch typos faster.

It's all about what one does with a computing device to make a determination of what is mandatory and what isn't and why.

External Monitor, external CD/DVD drive(s), external keyboard (wireless, if desired) are all possible with a laptop for specific tasks. The external monitors I used regardless, but the external DVD drive and keyboard can accomplish the specific jobs you need done. A laptop can do it. A desktop is not MANDATORY. If that's what you prefer then no problem.

I haven't used a desktop computer for myself since 2001. We have one for the kids to do homework and stuff, though.

If mawipafl feels the desktop is NECESSARY to do the required work, then by DEFINITION it is MANDATORY by their personal set of RULES since they feel it is REQUIRED. You could say it is ESSENTIAL to get their work done easier.

required by law or rules; compulsory.
"wearing helmets was made mandatory for cyclists"
synonyms: obligatory, compulsory, binding, required, requisite, necessary, essential, imperative
"a high school diploma is mandatory

You see what I did there?

Yeah I see it. Necessary is a better word for that than mandatory, but whatever...

I build a desktop that also functions as a server, used it for work related playing around.

This year this desktop fried my barracuda hard drive. Those used to be good and pricy, now they are junk like the rest of em. Got a new hard drive, this can satisfy my computing needs for another 5 years.

Laptops are at a point that there is no longer a need for desktops. I got my $1500 laptop for work, worked with it for 2-3 years, now it's hocked up to the TV and used as a multimedia center. I don't ever watch cable...

Keep meaning to setup lan between my desktop and my laptop.

you will not be able to manage without at least a laptop. many complex issues come up pertaining to system that must be resolved by either a laptop or desktop. i love tablets and smart phones but we have not progressed to a mobile stand alone device yet.

I could setup a wifi printer to work with my smartphone.

My notebooks do everything I ever did on the desktops (& towers) plus more since notebooks are portable.

I think I haven't turned on any of my desktops or towers since about 2006.

The hard drive capacities in my notebooks aren't large by current standards, but I use a couple of network drives for central storage with more file storage space than I'll probably ever need.
