In Windows XP/Vista/7, in Windows Explorer, I used to right click a file, and one of the popup menu items was "Open With." Hence I could right click on an RTF file and then Open With, and I could pick WordPad, Notepad, etc. Or I could right click a jpg, Open With, and then select Paint or other graphics programs.

Just now, Open With never appears at all. There is a list box at the top called Open or Edit and that does allow me to select which program. This posting is not about Control Panel > Default Programs, I already know how to use that.

I've been using 7 for two years and only recently did Open With go away. How could that happen??

I found some similar complaints and you can edit the registry but I don't want to play with that.

On a file Icon, I can right click and get the box you speak of. Open With is the 5th item down on mine. It used to be the second item in bold print. If you have had this feature before, but not now, I don't know why. Have you tried other files to see if you have the option. You might try the internet. Type in open with and see what you get. You might reboot to see if it is a problem that rights itself. Sorry, I don't know what else to suggest.

Shift while right clicking does nothing here.

When I highlight one file, there's a toolbar at the top with an "Open" with a drop down box. It lists the various apps I can use. But I don't see why the right click Open With disappeared.
