Don't do anything with the file(s) until you post here and someone gives you advice. More than one person would be good as there are those whose first reaction is reformat your drive.
saved copy? I got this computer in 2008. use it primarily to email and surf the web, thats it...

luckily i transferred all of my pictures onto a usb drive....

It appears I am dead in the water..I cant even get this to startup now in safe mode

How the hell can this go bad so quick??? the computer was working fine 24 hrs ago
Yup, pulling the plug during a chkdsk can do that. Actually 24 hours isn't bad, they can go from functional to dead in a matter of seconds.

You may want to consider taking it to a reputable shop for diagnosis.

If you have your important data, then at this point a reinstall of Windows might be the easiest way out, assuming you don't have a hardware failure.

No, I did not.
I suggested that Windows 7 be installed.
Using Windows Vista is not the best idea. When was the last time it had a security update?
Latest release = Service Pack 2 (v6.0.6002) / April 28, 2009; 5 years ago

Seriously? That's when SP2 was released. It gets updated the second Tuesday of the month like every other current Microsoft OS

If you go by that logic you shouldn't be using Windows 7 either as it's one and only service pack was released in 2011, 3 years ago

I would suggest reformat and re-install too, but only after knowing what's wrong. If the hard drive is bad re-formatting won't help.

OP, if you're lucky and have the equipment available (there, a friend, tech, etc) your best bet seems to be connecting this hard drive to another computer, copying all needed data (if it can be accessed) and either test this drive or replace it.

It might actually be time for that reformat.

hmm, think I'm 'in the same boat (with no paddle)', just happened and Vista and an old dang unit ('07 ?). I've reported here before 'motor noise' in the past and we might be done.

Is data reachable by above posts instruction ? me thinks I'm not as knowledgable as some.
