I will try to sum this up as briefly as I can. I bought a "new" computer (Sony Vaio) 6 mos. ago. The computer has had problems from the beginning and I have emailed the seller. he just says let Sony fix it, it is under warranty. I sent it to Sony in Oct. Turns out it is not new, was released full year before I bought it, has 1 stick of RAM missing (has 1 1/2 GB RAM instead of 2 GB), has a Maxtor hard drive (300 GB RAM instead of the 700 I was suppose to have), and screws missing. Now the warranty is void as it is not new, tampered with and has non-Sony parts. At this point it need a new hard drive, new motherboard, new CD/DVD write and other stick of RAM replaced, about $1000 Sony said. I refuse to let this scum rip me off. I have filed a report with our local police (idaho) which will in-turn contact his police (NY), filed a complaint with the NY Attorney General's office, complaint with the Better Business Bureau (just to tick him off, they are not an enforcing agency), and wrote a letter to a NY Times consumer fraud reporter, and sent a report to the legal dept. of Sony (he claims to be an authorized Sony dealer and is not). Any other ideas of what I can do to get my money back? He no longer answers emails, his phone number does not accept calls from anyone but businesses, refuses to do anything and still claims it was new.
You got screwed, sorry. For the amount that Sony is quoting you to "fix" it, you could buy a whole new system, and a relatively good one at that. You're practically replacing everything in it anyway, might as well get a new one that's under warranty.
Don't count on anything happening with the police, especially if it was a private sale (which you don't mention but it kind of sounds like it). As in all things, caveat emptor. He got you, and there's not a whole lot that you can do about it.
By the way, the amount you say Sony is quoting you for mb, ram, hd and cd-rw -- it's outrageous. Don't do it.

The computer was shipped to Sony repair in San Diego. It had completely stopped working. We knew before it even left that the CD/DVD writer never worked. Sony told us the rest and taking it apart and looking it over.
We bough a batch of Vaio's. (12 maybe?). We won't be buying any more,most had issues, but the 'exec's wanted them. When you buy a computer used on ebay, you are basicly buying it from him as is. If its covered from the factory warantee, great, but thats not the sellers problem. If you want it covered for sure, buy it new, and direct. For 1k, buy another one, dont give sony another dime. If he lied about the age and warantee status, you do have a legitimate gripe. But I doubt theres much you can do about it now. My guess is it gave him trouble too and thats why it went on ebay.
Have someone crack open the hard drive and get as much personal info as you can from those records that he thought he erased (unless he knows what he is doing, everything, I mean everything, will be there) - his passwords, banking info, personal emails, strange porno files, etc. This send him a few emails about it....I think you will get his attention.

First of all, I didn't buy this from Ebay. This guy sells on Ebay and that is where I first saw his computers, but I bought from him directly. The computer was not used from him so it had nothing of his on the hardrive. I used the computer for a few months before it crashed and there was nothing of his on it. He sold me an older model computer where he had taken out Sony parts and replaced with with lesser quality parts and didn't give me a computer with the specs he promised. The computer was sold as new and I have several emails from him stating this. He also stated he was an Authorized Sony Dealer (I have an email where he states that as well) and Sony says he is not. I also have a printout of the specs and an email from Sony which states the RAM I do have and it is not what I was suppose to get.
I forgot to add this. Since it was "new" it was suppose to have the full 1 yr. Sony warranty and Sony told me it did have the warranty and mailed me a postage free box and packing material to ship it to their repair center in San Diego. It was AFTER it got there and they took it apart to figure out what was wrong with it that they saw missing screws, non-Sony parts etc. and told me the warranty was void. I never paid Sony a cent. I could not afford to fix it and they shipped it back to me.
