Never be embarrassed. Even pros do things that are, "Uh, duh."

I blame it on Xmas, not me, never me.
I wanted to plug in some lights and thought it was the cord to the printer

I've been known to set up a computer for a client and spend a few minutes wondering why it won't start. Sometimes it's the lack of a power cord, sometimes the switch on the power supply is off. I just shake my head and make it right...

Thanks for trying to make me feel less stupid.
If I have any partial defense, it's that the battery had enough power left to turn the lights on but not start it so ,for me, didn't hint at a power issue.
The lesson from this for me and anybody else that needs it , is to not put off doing back-ups until 'tomorrow'.

More than one backup. With one current off site. Friends house relatives, etc. You might want to encrypt it on a usb drive so no one can snoop. I have three usb drives I carry with me at all times. Two are encrypted. One has documents, etc. The other pictures. The third is miscellaneous that I also use when helping others with computer problems. Not encrypted.

A backup online at Crashplan.

And backups to local drives attached to a Windows Home Server.

Yes, I'm paranoid. I have, in the past, lost a lot of data I really didn't want to. Won't happen again.
