After the 1st of the year I plan to buy a new laptop for myself that the kids will not have access to. I run a part time business where I provide admin support and a great deal of my work involves handling my client's social media accounts and marketing. I also do a lot of writing and I need to take it out and about (Starbucks, library, etc.) with me to work when my kids are home with my husband. I like the idea of having a tablet for reading my kindle books, facebook, etc. when I am at home. Does anyone use one of the new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 s for work purposes? Any advice or feedback would be great! Also--I am not sure if this is allowed here but recommendations on what you use/ think is good would be great as well.

I'd be more inclined to go with something like the Yoga Pro or maybe the Helix.

Later versions of the Surface are nicer, but when I had the original it was always frustrating to use as a laptop. It doesn't really work in your lap (just flops over) and the keyboards are horrific. I wound up just using it with an external mouse/keyboard/monitor when I needed a real computer.

I like to work from the couch and the Surface was simply not compatible with that (great for playing mahjong though), so I got rid of it.

I'd go for either the Helix or Helix 2nd Gen (but then I'd wait until February when they come out with their keyboard).

I used a Surface Pro 2 at work for about 4 months. The MS Keyboard, costs extra, that was purchased with the laptop took a little bit to get used to. I used an external mouse with the computer as I don't like using touchpads. I rarely used the touchscreen when I had access to both the mouse and the keyboard. The Surface Pro 3 may be good choice if you can get it repaired at an MS store. I think one was coming to Charlotte. If not, then you will have to mail it out to get it worked on which would not be an advantage over another band. Make sure you have a good backup solution in place. I have been told that the hard drive is soldered onto the motherboard so if that goes then you will most likely lose all of your data. I am not sure if MS has a data recovery unit but that can be an expensive service if they do.

The Surface is really nice, but it's just too expensive compared to what else is out there. Agree with NJBest and Jason to look at a Helix or Yoga.

I would definitely go with the yoga if this is going to be primarily a work computer.

unless you're going to do all of your work sitting at a desk, the tablet will simply frustrate you.

I've wondered why they haven't release a cheaper non 8.1 Pro version, are they targeting just corporate.

I would say yes, they are, and leaving the consumers to the "other companies".

I seriously doubt if any home users are going to spend $1,950 on a 512GB Surface Tablet when there is a $400 Yoga sitting next to it. I've had a problem with Surface pricing since the very first one. I paid $350 for my sweet little 8.1 tablet (including a keyboard) and it came with Office 2013 free.
Good old Microsoft: always taking 1 step forward...and 2 steps back. I am a MS fan and they continually disappoint me with dumb moves...

There are plenty of options for lower-end Windows PC's. I think Microsoft was purposely aiming to make a device with top-notch hardware to make sure that segment had an option.

Its definitely not for everyone.
