I have had Brother printers for years and have used both Brother and knock off ink and had few problems. I just replaced my old printer ( it was time) and the price of the Brother 401 cartridge is quite a bit more than my former printer. I am wondering if you have any experience with the knock off for the 401 or if you prefer the manufacturer printer.
I am not a high volume user, just a home computer usage - print maybe 10 pages per month. On one hand for a low end user the cost would be probably once annually and I can afford it but on the other hand it is very low and non professional usage.
I'm not sure if it holds with that model, but LD Products ink carts are generally fine. They have a guaranty, but if the printer balks, I just swap out the little chip on the cart with another. The self-clean routine can go through an ink cart all on its own over time. Mostly, I use my laser printer, but some specialty papers need the ink jet.
