I had to do a hard reboot again his morning for he 3rd time in less than 2 months.
It is 6 year old laptop.
Is I telling me something?
I so hate the idea of losing Win 7 if I have to buy a new one.
Is a refurb worth it, still being an older machine or should I grit my teeth , suck it up and get with the future and learn 10 (well....the present)
Sounds like the hard drive might be failing. If you could get a replacement drive and have someone clone your original drive, then all you'd need to do is switch the drives and keep trucking.
What was the exact issue that made you think (or forced you) to do a hard reboot?
Completely frozen screen? BSOD? Error message?
Check out the Event Viewer (Start > Run Eventvwr > OK) logs, focus on System and Application logs.
Use the "Filter Current Log" option on the right and check "Error", "Critical" and "Warning" boxes.
Look for clues mainly looking at errors right before the time you had to do a hard reboot.
Also, is the system clean, meaning can it be infected by malware or was it infected prior to the issue starting?
Proper troubleshooting and diagnostics is the key.

It just won't boot up.
It doesn't appear to be an usual problem just that I'm concerned about the fact that it's gettin more frequent.
You made me roll my eyes. Who told you IT guys really love these types of vague answers? Sometimes, I wonder if it reads "Fortune Cookie" on my forehead!

It may indeed be time for a new machine as usually, saving and older system by spending more than $100 is not worth it for most.
Back to your issue. What exactly is happening when you press the power button?
Nothing? No lights? No humming or noise? Simply nada? Are you using a docking station?
Is this laptop standalone or do you have anything else connected besides the AC battery charger? What happens if you take out the battery and connect the charger back in?

Just saw my other post and it was supposed to read that it wasn't made to sound like an UNUSUAL problem. when I found references from Google. Articles were mentioning CMOS and BIOS and I just took the "how to" since I wouldn't have understood the why anyway
Front lights come on but black screen and the system won't boot up. No noise suggesting it's even trying.
Laptop is stand alone, nothing else connected except the mouse.
Once I remove the battery,unplug the power cord, wait a bit and then restore all the power, it proceeds totally normally.
No, I can't access the BIOOS. It's as dead as if out of power...no start up 'whirl', no fan, nada.
After the 2nd time I saved what I wanted on a thumb drive.
