Does anyone have the HP Touchsmart 14 laptop? Mine might need a disc defrag. It was running great all this time, but I get back after being gone for 3 days and didn't take it with me, it wasn't hooked up to my wi fi, because I took that with me (for my phone) but now its running very incredibly slow. I was going to try to defrag it myself but can't seem find the menu that takes me to that, like my desktop and my last laptop had. Anyone know how I can get there WITHOUT taking it to someone?

A fragmented drive is one where many files have been written, deleted, saved, moved etc. Pieces of them end up all over the drive, it's unlikely 3 days with no one using it has caused it to become fragmented.

In any event go to My Computer, right click the drive (usually C) and select Properties. Now select the tools tab.

A touch laptop I am going to assume is Windows8: it is probably already set to defrag itself automatically. I doubt this is your problem.

This. Out of the Box Windows will defrag all on its own, the OP's computer has other issues.

I have touch screen desktop and Windows7.
However, defrag is done automatically by default. I don't know if disc defrag will help OP with her problem. There might be some other issues with the laptop. Slow computer might be caused by not enough of free HD space, too many background programs, outdated drivers, infections, overheating, or some sort of hardware failure.
I would start with a complete scans for virus/malware.

I have found that non techies seem to apply a great deal of importance to defrag, likely due to a lack of understanding of what fragmentation is.

Slow all the time or just when connected to the Internet? It's possible you didn't connect to your WiFi, but a neighbors and it's a slow connection or a weak signal.

This has been my experience too.

I'm at a loss to explain why a computer sitting disconnected from the net for 3 days would start running slower. I think, if I were sitting in front of it, I would check the network connection speed, manually run Windows updates (to make sure nothing is running in the background), and update and run a scan with the AV program for the same reason.
